Tyron Woodley gets split decision win over Kelvin Gastelum
LAS VEGAS -- It wasn't a crowd pleaser, but Tyron Woodley was happy with winning a split decision over Kelvin Gastelum on Saturday in the UFC 183 co-main event. "I'm happy," he said, post-fight.
Woodley was happy to prove he is capable of winning close fights that go the distance. He did that and more, in fighting a much heavier Gastelum.
The TUF winner missed weight by almost 10 pounds, Friday, but Woodley decided to fight him anyway, with the Nevada Athletic Commission ruling that 30 percent of his purse would go to Woodley.
After beating Kelvin, however, Tyron says he doesn't want any of that money. "I'm not the one to judge," he said.
"He lost the fight, missed weight. That's punishment enough."
Neither man did much in the first round, but the action picked up slightly in the second, with Woodley being the aggressor. In the third, both men swung hard and often, with punches.
Gastelum appeared to get the better in the final round, but it wasn't enough. Scores were 29-28, 28-29, and 30-27 for Woodley.
