Tyron Woodley attempts to create his own chant for UFC 205
Tyron Woodley has no problem going into the Octagon by himself but he'd prefer to have an army of New Yorkers behind him.
On Wednesday during the UFC 205 open workouts, Woodley decided to create his own rallying cry for fans at the weigh-ins in hopes that they would support him after stepping onto the scale for his first title defense against Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson.
"One thing guys — if you're coming to the weigh-ins for the fight, we're going to do a chant real quick. When I say 'who got my back?', I want everybody to say 'I got your back'. Don't leave me hanging, make me look stupid," Woodley told the fans in attendance at Madison Square Garden.
Judging by the amount of fans who chanted "Wonderboy" back at the welterweight champion, he may not want to try that again at the weigh-ins.
It appeared Woodley tried to turn the tide after he was greeted with boos when he appeared at the UFC 205 pre-fight press conference several weeks ago when he first faced off with Thompson ahead of their bout.
Regardless of the crowd reaction or the odds going into the fight — where Woodley is currently about a 2-to-1 underdog — the Ferguson, Missouri native isn't going to let any of it deter him on Saturday night.
Woodley has faced underdog status several times during his UFC career and he's still managed to pick up wins over a number of top ranked fighters before winning the title with a first round knockout over Robbie Lawler in July.
"They love to fuel my fire and I prove them wrong every single time. I was the underdog in my last five fights and I won them," Woodley said.
While Thompson is best known for his flashy strikes and dynamic kickboxing, Woodley has also landed some of the most devastating knockouts ever seen in the welterweight division.
Woodley didn't go as far as predicting the round where he would be victorious, but it's clear he's gunning for a devastating finish in his fight with "Wonderboy".
"I think just pure domination, pure violence," Woodley said about his fight. "I just plan on annihilating everybody in this division. Everybody counts me out, even the guys in my own weight division so it's not my fault I'm going to have to prove everybody wrong."
