Tony Ferguson wins fifth straight with submission of Gleison Tibau
TUF winner Tony Ferguson brought the hometown Southern California Staples Center crowd to its feet in the first main card bout of UFC 184 Saturday night. The lightweight took on one of the most successful lightweights in UFC history, Gleison Tibau, but managed to submit the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu blackbelt in the first round.
The win came at 2:37 via rear naked choke submission by Ferguson. The beginning of the end came for Tibau in the form of an overhand right to the temple that wobbled him.
Once the Oxnard fighter hurt Tibau, he knew that he could take home the win. "As soon as I saw him wobbling, I thought, 'snap-down city,'" he told Joe Rogan post-fight.
"Give me that neck!"
From there, Ferguson snapped the head of his opponent down with a drag and then took his back and sunk in the choke. Tibau was forced to submit.
Ferguson thanked Tibau for taking the fight on short notice and then thanked the partisan crowd. "I wanted to give you a show on my first time back home," he screamed in jubilation.
The win is Ferguson's fifth straight, and improves his overall mark to 18-3. Tibau's loss ended a three-fight win streak and dropped his record to 33-11.
