A superfight between Eddie Alvarez vs. Conor McGregor will headline UFC 205 in New York City
Conor McGregor will look to become the first UFC fighter to hold championships in two separate weight classes at the same time.
On Monday night, ESPN confirmed the earlier reports that featherweight champion Conor McGregor will look to capture his second title against lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 in New York City. It is also being reported McGregor will indeed be allowed to keep his featherweight belt when he squares off against Alvarez
McGregor (20-3) was previously scheduled to challenge former champion Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight belt in March before a broken foot forced the Brazilian to pull out of the title fight. As a result, Nate Diaz agreed to take the fight on short notice. He would go on to submit the Irishman in the main event of UFC 196.
McGregor would later avenge this to Diaz at UFC 202 last month.
So with his business with his Diaz taken care of for the time being, McGregor’s head coach, John Kavanagh and UFC President Dana White revealed they were hoping the featherweight champ would drop back down to lightweight and challenge Alvarez.
McGregor initially revealed he wasn’t impressed enough with the 155-pound champion’s win over dos Anjos to warrant a match-up. However these plans seemed to have changed. McGregor will enter this contest with 18 career (T)KOs, including six under the UFC banner and a record 13-second knockout over former champion Jose Aldo at UFC 194.
Alvarez (28-4), also a former Bellator, Bodog and MFC champion, was crowned the lightweight champion after finishing dos Anjos with strikes in the first round of their title fight at UFC Fight Night 90 in July. Not long after, Alvarez made it known he was seeking a fight against the winner of the rematch between McGregor and Diaz.
The Philadelphia native previously earned his shot at the belt with back-to-back decision wins over former Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez and former UFC champ Anthony Pettis. He will enter this title fight 22 career stoppage wins, including 15 by way of (T)KO.
UFC 205 will go down on November 12 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This historic event will mark the UFC’s first event in New York.
