Ronda Rousey suffers broken thumb, schedules knee surgery for next week
UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey wanted to take an extended break after her fight against Alexis Davis at UFC 175, and now she'll be forced into a sabbatical with surgery scheduled on her knee next week as well as a broken thumb suffered in his 16-second win on Saturday.
Rousey revealed to UFC Tonight that she will have arthroscopic knee surgery on her knee next Tuesday to clean up some existing issues the champion has been dealing with for a few fights now and it's time to get the problems fixed before they potentially get much worst.
Arthroscopic knee surgery is a fairly routine surgery and it will only keep Rousey on the sidelines for about two weeks.
In addition to her knee surgery, Rousey will also need some additional down time to allow her broken thumb to heal after suffering the injury during her fight with Davis at UFC 175. The broken thumb won't require surgery or even a cast, but will require the women's champion to sit out and avoid sparring or training for several weeks while the bones get back to full strength.
Rousey expressed interest in fighting on the New Year's card in early January 2015 and assuming she allows both her knee and thumb to heal properly there should be no issues with her returning at that time of the year.
There's been no word on potential opponents, but it's likely that top contender Cat Zingano will get the crack at Rousey for her next fight unless the UFC finds a way to sign Gina Carano between now and December to put that bout together instead.
