Ronda Rousey not seeking help from Floyd Mayweather, but an Olympic boxer

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Despite offers from Floyd Mayweather, Ronda Rousey has employed the services of an Olympic boxer to assist in her comeback at UFC 207.

Former UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey will attempt to regain her championship title when she faces the current champion, Amanda Nunes, at UFC 207. The California native suffered her first loss by knockout when she found herself on the receiving end of a devastating head kick and subsequent hammer fists at UFC 193, courtesy of Holly Holm.

To prepare for a possible stand-up war against Nunes, who scored a first-round technical knockout over former bantamweight champion Miesha Tate, Rousey has employed the services of Olympic boxer Mikaela Mayer. The American represented the United States in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Recently, on her Instagram page, Mayer posted a picture with her and Rousey, stating, “Good first sparring session with the champ.”

Hiring an Olympic-level boxer to prepare for Nunes represents sound judgement. The champion hits hard, and almost 70 percent of her victories have come by way of knockout. In an interview with TMZ, Nunes gave light to her confidence and striking abilities as she heads into UFC 207.

“I know she’s a very tough opponent, but I’m the best in the world…She’s going to be very surprised when I touch her, when I connect with my punches.”

At the same time, it is very curious that Rousey chose to secure the services of an Olympic boxer who did not acquire a medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, when one of the greatest boxers of all time, Floyd Mayweather, offered to assist the Judoka with her striking game. After Rousey’s loss to Holm last November, per FightHype.com, Mayweather stated:

“I want Ronda Rousey to hold her head up high and don’t let this discourage you. If you need help as far as with boxing, I’m here to help you. It’s all about timing and inches. Her ground game is unbelievable. She’ll be okay.”

Regardless, given Rousey’s history, she will most likely use her striking to close the distance to out grapple Nunes. Her grappling is elite. The 29-year-old possesses a bronze medal in Judo from the 2008 Olympic Games, and 75 percent of her wins have been secured via submission.

On December 30, at the at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the world will witness the return of the UFC’s biggest star, as she will attempt to regain her bantamweight title and return to glory.
