Report: Jose Aldo suffers fractured rib in training camp, UFC 189 status unclear

Published Jun. 23, 2015 3:04 p.m. ET

The highly-anticipated UFC 189 main event may be in jeopardy after featherweight champion Jose Aldo reportedly suffered a fractured rib in training on Tuesday.

According to Globo in Brazil, Aldo got hurt while sparring on Tuesday morning in his training camp where he suffered the injury.

The report states that Aldo was taken to the hospital where he underwent two separate tests, including a CT scan that confirmed a fractured rib.

The injury apparently happened during a sparring session when a teammate nailed Aldo with a kick to his midsection, and the champion fell down in pain immediately before being taken to the hospital to be examined.

The featherweight champion started treatment immediately to help the injured rib, but his status for UFC 189 remains up in the air. The typical recovery time for a fractured rib is three to four weeks.

Aldo is set to face Conor McGregor in possibly the biggest fight of 2015, but the rib injury could ultimately delay the showdown from happening on July 11.

His status remains unclear for now, with neither Aldo or his camp making any kind of public comment about the injury or how it might affect his ability to fight.

UFC officials have not responded to FOX Sports yet for comment on Aldo's reported injury or the impact it could have on the UFC 189 fight with McGregor.
