Relive Nate Diaz's upset of Conor McGregor at UFC 196

Published Mar. 6, 2016 5:07 a.m. ET

Nate Diaz scored undoubtedly the biggest win of his career Saturday, choking out featherweight champion Conor McGregor in their welterweight bout at UFC 196 en route to his 20th career victory.

McGregor bloodied the Stockton native early on as the two engaged in multiple fire-fights between mid-fight verbal jabs. Diaz, however, was able to find his range and unload on the Irishman with heavy-handed combos while McGregor fell just short on many powerfully thrown strikes.

Diaz finished the fight in typical Diaz fashion -- by submission -- in the second round, earning Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night bonuses in his best performance to date. Check out highlights of the incredible upset in the video above.

-- The win was Diaz's nine UFC submission, the second most in UFC history

-- According to FightMetric, Diaz landed 89 strikes over two rounds, 77 of which were categorized as significant

-- The 77 significant strikes landed against McGregor were more than the Irishman absorbed in his previous four fights combined -- Aldo (1), Mendes (31), Siver (32), and Poirier (10)

-- Diaz (1674) jumps ahead of his brother, Nick (1616), to move into third place across all divisions amongst active fighters for total strikes landed

-- The win helped Diaz secure not only his biggest payday inside the Octagon, but his 13th and 14th post-fight bonuses after taking home Performance of the Night and Fight of the Night for the second straight outing

-- Diaz landed 60 percent (54 of 90) of his strikes in the second round after landing just 37 percent (23 of 62) in the first round
