Pettis awaiting word on surgery
He was in, then he was out, and now, Anthony Pettis is in a state of limbo. The UFC lightweight champion, who was forced to withdraw from an expected December 14 title match with Josh Thomson, is awaiting the final word on his injured knee in order to have a realistic idea on just how long he will be out.
According to Ariel Helwani on Wednesday’s edition of UFC Tonight, Pettis will visit another specialist for one more opinion next week, and if he is advised to undergo surgery, he will do it.
A surgical procedure to fix his torn posterior cruciate ligament is expected to keep him out of action for approximately 4-6 months. The injury to his left knee was reportedly suffered during his championship win over Benson Henderson in August.
Additional sources told FOX Sports that this injury is not related to the one that forced him out of an August fight with Jose Aldo. That injury was to his right knee.
Pettis will visit a doctor in Los Angeles after watching his brother Sergio debut at UFC 167 this weekend.
The 26-year-old Pettis is 17-2 with 14 finishes, and is considered one of the most exciting and marketable champs on the UFC roster. It is currently undecided whether he’ll face Thomson or original No. 1 contender T.J. Grant upon his return.
