Miesha Tate tells her corner she's retiring at UFC 205 (Video)
Video of the exact moment in which Miesha Tate tells her corner that she is ready to retire.
Former women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate shocked the UFC and MMA world when she announced her retirement following a decision loss to Raquel Penning at UFC 205 inside Madison Square Garden.
In a preview video for “UFC 205: The Thrill and The Agony” cameras captured the exact moment in which Tate decided to retire. Both during her fight and immediately following it, Tate is caught telling her coach Bryan Caraway that she’s not showing up anymore and that she doesn’t care enough.
When Caraway responded that Tate brings it in practice at the gym, she quickly responded that she didn’t want to fight anymore.
After years in both Strikeforce and the UFC Tate became the bantamweight champion when she defeated Holly Holm by submission at UFC 196. Tate lost the title to Amanda Nunes at UFC 200 and her loss to Pennington at UFC 205 made it two straight losses for the former champion. And if she stays retired, Tate will end her UFC career with a record of 5-4 and an overall record of 18-7.
During her career, Tate was known for her long-standing rivalry with former women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey. Tate lost her belt to Rousey during their time at Strikeforce and was unable to regain the championship when the two fighters faced each other again at UFC 168. Both fighters also coached against each other on The Ultimate Fighter Season 18.
Coming into UFC 205, Tate said she believed Rousey would retire if she lost at UFC 207 where she will challenge Nunes for the bantamweight title, but also had future fights in mind for herself. Tate previously said she would be open to fighting Cris Cyborg at 140 pounds and also went on to say that she would like one more fight with Rousey if it could happen.
Following her loss at UFC 205 and her retirement announcement, Tate’s coach and long-time boyfriend Bryan Caraway said that the former champion didn’t seem herself lately. The video above seems to further prove what Caraway was getting at and shows that Tate seemed ready to call it a career.
