Lombard struggles with weight cut

Published Oct. 16, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

Hector Lombard may be cutting down to welterweight for his fight at UFC 166 against Nate Marquardt but it's not going to be easy.

Lombard, who stands at 5'9" but has shoulders broad enough to carry a house, made the move to 170 pounds after finding limited success in the middleweight division following a move to the UFC in 2012.

The cut to welterweight was never going to be a cakewalk, and Lombard tells UFC Tonight's Ariel Helwani that the move has been pretty brutal by all accounts. Lombard is currently in Houston for the event and stands at 178 pounds right now.

He will still need to shed off at least seven more pounds before Friday to make weight for the welterweight division and his fight with Marquardt.

While his bout this weekend is at 170 pounds, Lombard also stated that he's not done at middleweight forever. He would like to return there in the future, and maybe even for his next fight because he's already targeting the UFC Fight Night card in Australia on Dec 7 from Brisbane.

Lombard has spent a big part of his career fighting and training around Australia, and would love to return to Brisbane where his son lives for his next fight.

First up, Lombard will need to make weight and win his fight against Marquardt to stave off a second defeat in a row to ensure that he will even have the chance to fight in Australia come December.
