Jorge de Oliveira tests positive for steroids, suspended one year
Following an initial statement that all the fighters from UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. LaFlare came back clean, the Brazilian MMA commission (CABMMA) announced on Thursday that prelim competitor Jorge de Oliveira tested positive for steroids.
According to a release from the commission, de Oliveira's test came back a day later, which caused some confusion and a miscommunication that all of the results from the card came back clean.
The commission stated that de Oliveira's sample came back positive for Stanozolol, an anabolic steroid. The sample was tested at the UCLA Olympic Analytical Lab in Los Angeles, which is a WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) laboratory.
He was suspended one year retroactive to the date of the fight on March 21.
De Oliveira lost in his bout at UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. LaFlare, falling to Christos Giagos by first round rear naked choke submission. It marked his second fight and second loss in the UFC.
Following the positive test result and suspension being announced, de Oliveira's coach Marcio Cromado told MMAFighting.com that they deny the charges being levied against the fighter and will appeal the suspension.
