Heavyweights Miocic and Gonzaga face off at UFC On FOX 10
UFC On FOX 10: Henderson vs. Thomson taking place in Chicago on Jan. 25 has added a heavyweight tilt between Ohio native Stipe Miocic and Octagon veteran Gabriel Gonzaga as announced by UFC officials on Wednesday evening.
The two heavyweights have been rumored to face off for the past few weeks, but until now there hadn't been a date confirmed for the fight. Now it appears Chicago will get a battle of the big men when Miocic and Gonzaga both look to take a step forward in the UFC's heavyweight top ten.
No. 9-ranked Miocic returns for the first time in seven months when he fights at the UFC On FOX show after bludgeoning Roy Nelson for the better part of 15 minutes in his last bout at UFC 161. The highly touted prospect currently holds a 4-1 record in the UFC and will look to make it two in a row when he faces a former heavyweight title contender in January.
With a UFC career that dates back to 2005, Gabriel Gonzaga is one of the longest tenured fighters on the roster. While he did flirt with retirement for a short time between 2010 and 2011, his return to the UFC has yielded a 4-1 record recently including back-to-back first round knockouts over Dave Herman and Shawn Jordan.
The upcoming fight between Miocic and Gonzaga will take place during the UFC On FOX card in Chicago, although the final lineup for the televised broadcast have not been announced as of yet.
