Francimar Barroso wins grinding decision against Ryan Jimmo

Published May. 30, 2015 11:31 p.m. ET

Francimar Barroso may have landed the biggest shot of his light heavyweight contest against Ryan Jimmo Saturday night on UFC Fight Night main card, but it wasn't a legal blow. After a first round of mostly grinding Jimmo against the cage and working for a takedown, the Brazilian landed a front kick flush to the groin of the Canadian.

The illegal low blow was so damaging that Jimmo eventually needed every second of the five minutes he was allowed to recover, but for awhile, it appeared as though he might not be able to continue fighting. Jimmo asked for the doctor, and a bucket, in case he may need to vomit as he lay face-down on the Octagon mat.

He didn't, and he fought on. In fact, Jimmo's best moments of the fight came late in the second round, as he landed huge right uppercuts to the head of Barroso, that could have knocked a mule off all four feet.

Barroso stood up to the strikes, however, and landed his own hard counter strikes. The third round was a lot like the first, with Barroso pressing Jimmo against the cage, and Jimmo successfully using a good left overhook and right cross face and underhook to defend.

Barroso didn't land much offense in the final round, but he pressed more, including two charges where he landed right punches to the head. In the end, it was all enough for Barroso to win a unanimous decision.

Scores were 30-27 (twice) and 29-28 for Barroso. The win gets Barroso on the right track, and improves his record to 17-4.

Jimmo has now lost two straight. His record drops a tad to 19-5.
