Fabricio Werdum vs. Travis Browne results: Who won at UFC 203?

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The co-main event of UFC 203 saw a rematch between heavyweight contenders Fabricio Werdum and Travis Browne. Here are the full fight highlights.

When Fabricio Werdum lost to Stipe Miocic in his home country, he wanted to fight again right away. He called for a rematch at UFC 200, but that was never seriously discussed. He then decided that the best way to prove he’s still a top heavyweight contender is to fight on the same card as the champion, and put in an impressive performance so he can face the winner next.

In Travis Browne, he gets an opponent that he’s familiar with, and one where he’s favored. While Browne is a very uneven 2-3 in his last five, with his most recent loss coming to Cain Velasquez at UFC 200, but he has fought the very best in his division. In the rematch of their classic 2014 bout, Werdum emerged victorious. Here’s how the fight played out.

Round 1

Fabricio Werdum wastes no time with action! Not even five seconds in, he lands a flying kick to Browne’s face. A minute later, he attempts a somersault kick. Why didn’t he try doing this in Brazil?

With a minute left to go in the round, Werdum threw a punch that landed right on Browne’s chin. He started applying ground-and-pound, where he soon transitioned to his ground game. Being the world-class submission artist that he is, the fight looked to be over when he locked in a guillotine, but Browne somehow avoided tapping. Nevertheless, that was one of the funnest rounds in recent memory.

10-8 Werdum

Round 2

Travis started throwing combinations, but looked sluggish in his attempts. In terms of pace, the contrast between the first and the second was stark. There were audible boos when each passing minute without any action went by. While nobody deserved to win that round, Browne certainly didn’t even up the scorecards. Werdum tried to revive the action with another somersault kick, but it was too little too late.

20-17 Werdum

Round 3

Perhaps Werdum felt like he could coast to victory after the first round. While he could technically do that, he won’t win over any fans. Browne knew he had a lot of ground to cover as far as making up the total strikes landed, but at least he was trying. However, his hand speed is practically non-existent, and Werdum was able to get out of the way.

Werdum 30-26

Even though the fight was over, Werdum started getting into it with Browne’s corner. He actually attempted a front kick on Edmond Tarverdyan! Just a bizarre fight that was par for the course of a really bizarre night.

Both Werdum and Browne are coming off of knockout losses, and both looked hesitant. Werdum hardly missed a beat in the first round, but did nothing of note in the second and third. The sensible fight for Werdum would be a rematch with Cain Velasquez, with the winner getting a title shot.
