Daniel Cormier, Rumble Johnson to collide in UFC 206 rematch

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Anthony Johnson finally gets his wish, as he’ll be facing Daniel Cormier at UFC 206 in a rematch for the UFC light heavyweight championship.

The UFC light heavyweight title picture has been interesting to say the least. When considering all the factors, including the Jon Jones incident at UFC 200, and the many rising contenders waiting for their shot at current champion Daniel Cormier, things are finally beginning to come together, whether Jones is around or not.

Without a doubt, the one man who is worthy of another shot at the title is Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. Since losing to Cormier at UFC 187, Johnson has gone on to win three straight in very impressive fashion. He knocked out Jimi Manuwa in the second round and knocked both Ryan Bader and Glover Teixeira out in the first. Other than Jones and Cormier, he’s the best light heavyweight in the MMA world right now.

After lobbying for a fight with Cormier to go down at UFC 205 in New York and a bitter Twitter war between the two, the fight is finally going down. Announced during UFC Tonight on Wednesday, Cormier will be defending his light heavyweight title against Johnson at UFC 206 in Toronto.

Cormier faced Jones at UFC 182 for his first shot at the belt. Although he came up short, Jones was stripped of the belt due to his issues outside the cage, and Cormier was granted the opportunity of a lifetime. After successfully beating Johnson, he defended his title against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 192 and won a hard fought split decision.

He was scheduled to defend his title against Jon Jones at UFC 200, but Jones was pulled from the match-up just days before the fight because of a potential anti-doping violation. Anderson Silva stepped in, and Cormier won by unanimous decision.

Cormier will look to defend his title for the second time, while Johnson will be looking for the knockout to become the new UFC light heavyweight champion.

UFC 206 goes down on December 10, 2016.
