Dana White: 'I'm not afraid to give St. Pierre more money'
UFC President Dana White confirms the rumor that the UFC is willing to work to bring Georges St. Pierre back to the Octagon.
This has been quite the few weeks for mixed martial arts developments outside the cage. Last week it was the development of the Mixed Martial Arts Athletes Association, which involved one of the greatest competitors in history, Georges St. Pierre. It seems as if the fighter known as “Rush” has piqued the interest of leadership within the UFC once again.
News broke on Thursday that GSP and the UFC are close to reopening contract negotiations. While speaking on Canadian network, TSN, the former welterweight champion mentioned these developments and what they could mean.
“[Joining the MMAAA] doesn’t mean I’m done with the UFC”, said St-Pierre. “Like other members, like Cain Velasquez, Tim Kennedy, Cowboy Cerrone, they’re all seasoned fighters. Doesn’t mean I’m done. Actually, the night that we launched the association we received a letter, Rodolphe [Beaulieu] received a letter, my agent, from the UFC lawyer saying that they want to renew the negotiation with me because at the point where I was before the negotiation, the communication was cut. So we didn’t have any kind of communication.”
That was quite the revelation as the MMAAA stands to be a potential opponent against the strength that the UFC has built within the industry. Still, that doesn’t mean that the promotion wants to cut ties with one of the biggest stars to ever compete in MMA.
“I have a good relationship with Georges and yeah, obviously, we would love him to fight,” UFC President Dana White said while speaking on the Chad Dukes vs. the World radio show. “The problem is, Georges has a deal. Georges is under contract with us right now. He has a deal. I’m not afraid to give Georges St-Pierre more money, but it’s got to be reasonable.”
St. Pierre was rumored to be on the UFC 206 card but that fell apart and led to GSP’s announcement that he is a “free agent,” which the UFC refuted. Since then, St. Pierre has appeared in pictures with the leadership of Bellator MMA and played a role in the announcement of the MMAAA. All that withstanding, it seems like the UFC is willing to honor his contract and bring him back into the Octagon under the right circumstances.
