Conor McGregor wants Ronda Rousey to take inspiration from him
UFC Featherweight Champion and Lightweight title contender Conor McGregor has declared he is “very excited” for the return of Ronda Rousey in December.
Following a week of extravagent fines and training incident rumours, Conor McGregor appeared calm and collected in his interview with “The Lad Bible.” And perhaps most significantly, he showed no visible signs of damage – certainly not the face of a man who had just suffered a possible knockout and a broken nose.
When asked about his thoughts on Rousey’s return, McGregor spoke from experience: “I think losses can really affect you. It’s a crazy business we’re in, especially at the very high top.” A year ago, the UFC had two seemingly invincible megastars, yet within the space of four months that invincibility was shattered, as both suffered devastating losses.
Ronda Rousey lost her Bantamweight belt to Holly Holm last November. “Rowdy” struggled to cope with the disappointment of the loss, and decided to shy away from public appearances for the duration of the past year. In that time, she became something of an enigma — so much so that many questioned whether or not she would fight again.
McGregor, on the other hand, chose to face his adversity head on. After his second round submission loss to Nate Diaz in March, he immediately sought out a rematch, and attained his revenge by beating Diaz at UFC 202 in August.
People deal with turmoil differently. One thing the same was that both of these fighters were surrounded by a cloud of hype and mystique. Sadly, in this business it only takes one hard shot to make that cloud disappear. But as McGregor proved, while you might never seem “unbeatable” again, you can gain a new level of respect by coming back strong.
With that in mind that he said:
“I hope she took inspiration on how I came back from my defeat, and I wish her all the best. She’s fighting a solid competitor, and I’m excited to see how it all unfolds.”
Hopefully, those words of encouragement from her fellow UFC superstar will resonate. It will be interesting to see how much she has learned from her loss, and whether we see “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey back to her destructive best.
Just like Conor McGregor, the whole MMA world is excited to see how this one unfolds. On Dec. 30th, at UFC 207, we will all finally find out.
