Conor McGregor calls out UFC roster

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Conor McGregor put the entire UFC roster on blast for their continued comments about his power within the promotion.

UFC 205 is set to be one of the biggest –if not the biggest– mixed martial arts event of the year. With three title fights and the event being headlined by Conor McGregor against Eddie Alvarez; this showcase has fights for mainstream and hardcore fans alike. The pre-event hype continues to grow each day and McGregor launched a salvo at not only Alvarez, but the entire UFC roster.

“They all say I’m all talk, but I look at them and say they’re all talk because I’m here fighting every week,” McGregor said in a video posted to his YouTube page. “I even had to fight a guy three times the size of me, and now, I’m back again. All they do is complain, [expletive] and moan. You want this money? You want what I got? You have to put in the [expletive] work. And as far as I’m seeing, nobody is putting in the work. Everyone is talking; everyone is thinking just because Conor has it, I should have it. No, no. I didn’t always have it. There is a reason why I have it. I had to work my [expletive] bollocks off to get it, and here I am, still working while they’re talking.”

That “work” that McGregor talks about is the promotional campaigns he puts behind each one of his bouts. Soon after his UFC debut in 2013 McGregor set out on a quest to antagonize his way into any big match available. A mere three years later he’s become one of the biggest stars in the sport, garnering paydays and audiences that have trumped anything this sport has seen in the past.

McGregor then turned his attention to his upcoming opponent, the current lightweight champion Alvarez. Many have questioned whether or not McGregor deserves a title shot in a division in which he hasn’t competed yet within the Octagon, but his box office value outweighs the validity of justification by rankings.

“No [Alvarez doesn’t matter], he just has the belt,” McGregor said. “That’s it. That’s the only reason he’s there. After, I’m going to be struggling to see who’s next. Really, who the [expletive] is next? Who has gone out there time and time again, back-to-back-to-back, putting it all on the line and continuing to show up?”

McGregor has hinted at something “big” to come after UFC 205. While speculation around the announcement has grown, there’s no doubt that he’s the biggest star within the promotion and he’s made it clear that he deserves this spot, regardless of what other people think of his position.
