There have been some fearsome heavyweight champions in the history of the UFC, but the fight headlining the card this weekend in Houston might just have the best ever.
Current UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez battles former title holder Junior Dos Santos in the main event of UFC 166 in a fight for the ages because both competitors are not only considered to be the best right now, but a step ahead of almost every fighter in the division.
With the series tied at one win a piece for each fighter, the showdown on Saturday will not only settle the score in the rubber match between Velasquez and Dos Santos, but UFC president Dana White believes it will determine the greatest heavyweight champion in UFC history.
"Yeah I do," White answered when asked if the winner will be considered the best heavyweight of all time. "I think these two right here are the best two heavyweights in the world. They're in their prime and yeah this is a great fight."
The heavyweight title has bounced around a lot in since first being introduced in 1997 with no champion completing more than two defenses of the belt since its inception. Velasquez has a chance to match that mark on Saturday night if he can get past Dos Santos again, but it won't be easy.
Dos Santos is the only blemish on Velasquez's record after being knocked out by the Brazilian in 2011 at the inaugural UFC on FOX event in Anaheim, Calif. In terms of the UFC, Velasquez also stands as Dos Santos' only loss as well.
The two heavyweight behemoths will square off on Saturday night with only one man standing tall as champion, and at least in White's opinion the greatest heavyweight in UFC history.
