Andrei Arlovski vs. Frank Mir targeted for UFC 191 but not official

A fight that was supposed to happen a decade ago might finally become a reality in September with Andrei Arlovski vs. Frank Mir being targeted for UFC 191 in Las Vegas.

The new fight is far from official, but according to sources speaking to UFC Tonight's Ariel Helwanithe bout is currently in discussion.

Arlovski and Mir have been linked to one another for the past 10 years after both reigned as UFC heavyweight champion between 2004 and 2006.

Mir won the title when he snapped Tim Sylvia's arm at UFC 48 and he was expected to face Arlovski in his first championship defense, but a motorcycle accident put him out of action and nearly ended his career.

While Mir was out due to injury, the UFC was forced to move forward with a new champion and Arlovski claimed the belt with a win over Sylvia at UFC 51.

Both fighters have enjoyed a career renaissance lately, with Arlovski winning his last three bouts since returning to the UFC, including a knockout victory over Travis Browne. Mir has picked up two wins in a row, most recently finishing Todd Duffee in the first round at UFC Fight Night in San Diego.

Now the two heavyweight icons might finally be ready to do battle as part of the UFC 191 card taking place on Sept. 5 in Las Vegas.

For now Arlovski vs. Mir is just targeted for the show. Nothing is official until bout agreements are issued and both fighters sign on the dotted line.
