Zheng Jie to have surgery on wrist injury

Published Sep. 15, 2010 11:21 a.m. ET

Zheng Jie of China is set to have surgery to repair a nagging injury to her left wrist and could be sidelined for the rest of the year.

Tournament organizers said Wednesday that Zheng has withdrawn from next week's China Open in Beijing in order to fly to the United States for surgery after her injury was found to have worsened during the U.S. Open. She was knocked out in the second round by Ana Ivanovic at Flushing Meadows, but reached the semifinals in doubles.

Zheng said ''I had been suffering from the injury the whole year.''

The 23rd-ranked Zheng is expected to be out for between three and six months, and is set to miss November's Asian Games being held in Guangzhou, China.
