Canadian tennis player Aleksandra Wozniak became the latest sports WAG to stand by her man Tuesday, when she took to Twitter to slam the Montreal Canadiens for demoting her boyfriend, forward Louis Leblanc, to Hamilton of the AHL.
In two since-deleted tweets — one in English, one in her native French — Wozniak said that it was “wrong” for the Habs to cut Leblanc when they did:
According to TSN, the French tweet, when translated to English, reads: "A real joke with the worst excuse for cutting someone. Really not a 'fair shot!' Too much manipulation!"
Wozniak isn’t the first wife or girlfriend to use social media to blast her beau’s team this offseason. Tamara Ribeiro, the wife of new Phoenix Coyotes center Mike Ribeiro, tweeted that she was “pissed beyond belief” when her husband’s former team, the Washington Capitals, failed to sign him to an extension.
We’ve also seen wives stick up for their athlete husbands in football, too — including Gisele Bundchen, who criticized Patriots receivers for dropping passes from her husband, Tom Brady, in New England’s Super Bowl XLVI loss.
And last year, another Patriots WAG — Wes Welker’s wife, Anna, wrote a Facebook takedown of Ray Lewis after the Baltimore Ravens beat New England in the AFC Championship.
In it, Anna Welker wrote: “Proud of my husband and the Pats. By the way, if anyone is bored, please go to Ray Lewis' Wikipedia page. 6 kids 4 wives. Acquitted for murder. Paid a family off. Yay. What a hall of fame player! A true role model!" She later apologized.
On the basketball court, Carmelo Anthony’s wife made headlines this May when she reminded Celtics reserve Jordan Crawford that “You on the bench for a reason,” after Crawford got into it with Anthony during a playoff game. La La Anthony was also the topic of a previous beef between ‘Melo and Kevin Garnett.
As for the latest WAG outburst, Wozniak may have had a point. Leblanc was the 18th overall pick in the 2009 draft and played in 42 games for the Canadiens in 2011-12. The 22-year-old did not see any NHL time last year, but figured to play a role in the team's plans this season before he was one of 14 players cut Monday night.
It’s possible that a call-up could be in Leblanc’s future depending on how he plays in the minors this season, but it’s probably fair to say that his girlfriend ripping his team won’t earn him any brownie points within the organization.
