Thailand Open: Top seed Peng Shuai loses in second round
Top-seeded Peng Shuai of China fell to Misaki Doi of Japan 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in the second round of the Thailand Open on Wednesday.
Doi, in their first meeting, handed Peng her earliest loss in Pattaya. Peng had reached at least the quarterfinals in four previous appearances.
Doi's first quarterfinal since October 2013 will be against seventh-seeded Monica Puig of Puerto Rico, who beat Romina Oprandi of Switzerland 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.
Former two-time champion Vera Zvonareva ousted eighth-seeded Zhang Shuai of China 7-6 (6), 6-3.
Zhang served for the first set at 5-4 and 6-5, and had a set point in the tiebreaker at 6-5. Zvonareva finally took the set after an hour with a sharp backhand cross-court winner.
Zvonareva, champion in 2009 and 2010 and entered this year as a wild card, pulled away in the second set as Zhang committed errors. The Russian next faces Marina Erakovic of New Zealand, who put away Yuliya Beygelzimer of Ukraine 6-1, 6-1.
