Irina-Camelia Begu, Johanna Larsson advance to Rio's 2nd round

Second-seeded Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania has advanced to the second round of the Rio Open, defeating Olivia Rogowska of Australia 6-1, 6-3 in the outdoor clay event.

Another seeded player, No. 5 Johanna Larsson of Sweden, also advanced in the joint WTA-ATP event. She defeated Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor when the Spanish player retired with an injury with Larsson leading 6(5)-7, 7-6(3), 4-2.

However, No. 8 Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa was beaten by American Grace Min 6-2, 6-1.

Top-seeded Sara Errani of Italy plays Tuesday. On the men's side, top-seeded Rafael Nadal also plays Tuesday, as do fellow Spaniard and No. 2 David Ferrer. No. 3 Tommy Robredo of Spain played late Monday.

Nadal, Ferrer and former Brazil star Gustavo Kuerten participated Sunday in a downpour in Rio's famous Carnival parades.
