Donald Young defeats 8th-seeded Adrian Mannarino at Memphis

American Donald Young defeated eighth-seeded Adrian Mannarino of France in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (9) Monday afternoon in the opening round of the Memphis Open.

Young ousted Mannarino, the only seeded player in action Monday, in an hour and a half, using nine aces and winning 79 percent of his first service points.

The Memphis Open is the former U.S. Indoor that was renamed when the USTA took over the tournament last year.

In earlier matches Monday, American Ryan Harrison defeated Filip Krajinovic of Serbia 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and Denis Kudla was a straight-set winner over fellow American Robby Ginepri 6-3, 6-4. Dustin Brown of Germany defeated Marinko Matosevic 6-4, 6-4, while Ivan Dodig of Croatia ousted Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia 6-2, 6-2.

In the late match, Jared Donaldson defeated Stefan Kozlov 7-5, 6-0, both Americans gaining a spot in the tournament as wild-card entries.

Neither player could hold serve in most of the first set. After Donaldson broke Kozlov in the sixth game for a 4-2 lead, he appeared to gain control, taking his ensuing service game to 40-0. His play became erratic at that point, eventually double-faulting to allow Kozlov another break.

The breaking-serve trend continued until Kozlov held to tie the set at 5-all. But eventually Kozlov double-faulted to allow Donaldson to take the first set 7-5.

That was the end of any momentum for Kozlov and he struggled in the second set, not winning a game.
