LONDON --

West Ham has signed defender Sam Byram from Leeds for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old Byram joins the English Premier League club on a four-and-a-half year contract after rejecting a move to Everton.

''I'm unbelievably proud and happy to join a club as big as this,'' Byram said Wednesday after completing his move.

''It's a childhood dream of mine to play in the Premier League so to have the chance to get into a team like this...I just want to get my head down and work hard and hopefully get a chance,'' Byram added.

Byram turned down Everton on Monday after holding discussions with Toffees manager Roberto Martinez.

He could make his debut for the Hammers against title-chasing Manchester City at Upton Park on Saturday.
