Werder Bremen wants Robin Dutt to become the Bundesliga club's new coach.
The German Football Federation says Werder has asked it to release Dutt from his post as director of sports. Dutt's contract with the DFB runs through 2016. His main job is to supervise the development of junior sides.
The DFB's board will meet next week to decide whether to release Dutt.
Dutt made his name as coach of Freiburg but was fired by Bayer Leverkusen after less than a season in charge, following a loss to Freiburg in April 2012. In Leverkusen, he had succeeded Jupp Heynckes, now the outgoing coach of Bayern Munich.
