Watch Lionel Messi's unbelievable record-setting free kick

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 10:00 p.m. ET

Lionel Messi is now Argentina's all-time leading goal scorer. Fittingly, he did it in incredible fashion, too.

You could not hit that free kick any better.

Brad Guzan is defending that half of the goal and it still doesn't matter. If you walked up to the goal and placed it in the ideal spot, you would put it exactly where Messi kicked it. And somehow, because he is Messi, it's not mind-blowing. It's expected. Because he does the remarkable every single match.

Messi entered Copa America Centenario with 50 career goals for Argentina, four off the record set by Gabriel Batituta. He scored three in 19 minutes as Argentina ran past Panama in the group stage, then tied the mark with a goal in the quarterfinals. That set the stage for today, when he did this and became the greatest goal scorer in Argentina history.

That Messi would become Argentina's top goal scorer was a foregone conclusion. It was just a matter of when. Well, now we know.
