Roma captain Francesco Totti prevented former team-mate and coach Vincenzo Montella from winning on his return to the Stadio Olimpico.

Totti scored the first and last goals of the match against Catania to give the Giallorossi a 2-2 draw.

But Totti needed the goals to redeem himself after seeing an early penalty saved by Catania goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo.

Catania were in position to give their coach victory after goals from Francesco Lodi and Giovanni Marchese had cancelled out Totti's opener and put them in front with 68 minutes gone.

But Totti's second with 13 minutes remaining ensured a point for the home side to keep their faint hopes of playing in the Europa League alive.

The result extended Roma's winless run to five games and left them in seventh place in Serie A, three points behind Lazio, who hold the last European qualifying spot.

Catania climbed to ninth place with one game remaining.

The hosts, bolstered by the return of strikers Daniel Osvaldo and Erik Lamela from suspension, missed a chance to go ahead in the ninth minute.

The referee pointed to the spot after Carrizo pulled down Borini in the area.

Totti stepped up to take the resulting penalty but his central effort was kept out by Carrizo.

Midway through the first half, Roma's defence failed to clear the ball in the area and Nicola Legrottaglie's goal-bound shot was saved by Roma goalkeeper Bogdan Lobont.

Before half-time, Borini tried his luck from outside the area and his powerful effort went just wide of the far post.

Roma broke the deadlock seven minutes after the re-start when Totti hit the ball from 30 yards towards the far post and beat Carrizo.

Catania pulled level in the 58th minute after Gabriel Heinze brought down Barrientos and the referee pointed to the spot for the second time in the match.

Lodi converted the chance with the goalkeeper diving the opposite way.

Catania then went in front when Lodi's free-kick found Marchese at the edge of the area and the defender blasted the ball with his left foot past Lobont.

Totti notched his second when he got behind Miralem Pjanic's pass and struck the ball from the heart of the area past Carrizo.

Roma end the season at Cesena while Catania host Udinese next.
