Puel receives backing despite Lyon's cup loss
Lyon coach Claude Puel has president Jean-Michel Aulas' backing "for the season" despite renewed calls for him to be sacked following the League Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
Lyon was booed off the field and fans called for Puel's resignation after Wednesday's 2-1 loss, which followed last weekend's embarrassing 1-1 league draw at last-place Arles.
Following a poor start in the French league which has the team in 14th place, Aulas had previously given Puel until the end of October to turn the situation around.
"We have taken the decision to keep the staff that is currently in place," Aulas said. "It is a decision that will stand for the season."
Lyon has won nothing since Puel took over from Alain Perrin after Perrin led Lyon to the league and French Cup double in the 2007-08 season - the last of Lyon's seven consecutive French titles. Despite that success, Perrin was sacked.
Club officials called a meeting on Wednesday, before the match against PSG, to assess the situation and Lyon's good progress in the Champions League worked in Puel's favor.
Puel became the first Lyon coach to take the club to the semifinals in last season's Champions League, and Lyon has won its opening three group games this season.
Goalkeeper Remi Vercoutre denies press reports that several players no longer want to work with Puel.
"We have never fallen out with anyone whatsoever," Vercoutre said. "I think the president has made the right decision, in any case I didn't see anyone standing up (against it) in the changing room. I hope it brings these rumors to an end."
Lyon is at home to Sochaux on Saturday.
"We're not happy with this 14th place, we are desperate to climb up the table," Vercoutre added. "I hope the fans will keep backing us."
