Police: Stoke player arrested for alleged assault

Police say Stoke winger Jermaine Pennant has been arrested in connection with an alleged assault.

Police in Manchester say Pennant was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a woman in a Manchester nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning. The 29-year-old player was released on bail pending further investigation.

In a separate incident, Pennant was charged with drunk driving and driving without insurance after a minor traffic accident early Sunday.

The incidents occurred several hours after Pennant played in Stoke's 1-1 draw with his former club, Arsenal.

Police said in a statement Wednesday that Pennant is due to appear in court May 9 to face the driving charges.
