Argentine Osvaldo Ardiles, a World Cup winning player in 1978 and a former manager of Tottenham Hotspur, says he wants to be Australia's new national coach.

Dutchman Pim Verbeek will vacate the position after the tournament and Football Federation Australia is seeking a big-name candidate to replace him.

Ardiles says he's very interested in the position but expects a strong list of contenders. FFA chief executive Ben Buckley says there has been an excellent response from coaches around the world seeking the vacancy.
