Former Germany striker Oliver Neuville has announced his retirement from the game at the age of 37.

Neuville, who made 69 appearances for the national side, scoring 10 goals, had been playing for Arminia Bielefeld in Bundesliga 2.

"It's definitively over. I've been thinking about it for a while already but that isn't how I hoped it would happen. I hoped to play for longer," Neuville told German newspaper Bild.

Neuville appeared in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups as well as at Euro 2008, and made over 300 appearances in his spells with Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Moenchengladbach.
