AC Milan's new signing Philippe Mexes has expressed his delight at joining the Italian champions.

The France international is to join the Rossoneri on a free transfer after seven years at Roma.

"I can make it official," Mexes said. "I am a Milan player for the next four seasons.

"I am happy to arrive to Milan, one of the best clubs in Italy and the world. I am proud, especially when I see the new jersey with the Scudetto!"

The 29-year-old defender has long been a target for Milan, but Roma's refusal to sell forced them to wait until his contract expired.

"When Milan offered me this opportunity I did not hesitate," Mexes said in an interview with France Football.

"I had to options to remain at Roma or to join Milan. Roma has been my second home but I made the decision to leave the club this winter.

"I took into consideration all the criteria. I also knew that Milan had followed me for the last three years.

"Milan is a reference for everyone and they share my ambitions.

"It's a club that cultivates victories and is superior just like Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

"I am going there to win.

"The Champions League is also my aim."

The French international will join his new club in pre-season training on July 12.

Mexes is currently in Toulouse where he is recovering from a knee injury sustained on April 3.
