Max Meyer is a Tottenham pipe dream
Max Meyer is not signing for Spurs today
Occasionally I write a story about Tottenham where I hope I’m wrong. Such is the case with this piece about rumors connecting Spurs with Schalke attacker Max Meyer.
I’d love to see the Bundesliga starlet end up at Tottenham tomorrow. He’s got loads of potential, and even at the reported purchase price of 45 million pounds I think he’d be an efficient purchase for Spurs. Unfortunately, the chances of Meyer joining the squad tomorrow are approximately the same as Jack Wilshere coming to the club on loan.
First of all, Schalke aren’t in a position to sell one of their most talented young stars. The Bundesliga club doesn’t need the money, and Meyer is a huge part of their attack. Selling him on the final day of the transfer window would leave them no time to replace him. Even for a giant transfer fee, it would still be a critical blow to their hopes for the season.
Even if you believe that Schalke would be willing to make a deal, it’s almost impossible to see Daniel Levy paying that sort of fee for Meyer. While I think he’s a giant talent, he’s still relatively unproven. If Spurs weren’t willing to splash the cash for a more established attacker like Sofiane Boufal, they certainly aren’t going to do so for Meyer.
There are also serious questions as to whether or not the player would sanction a move. He’s receiving regular playing time for Schalke, and wouldn’t be a guaranteed starter for Mauricio Pochettino’s club. Sure, he’d get a big pay raise, but would that really be worth it for the 20-year-old starlet?
Tottenham fans need a player to dream about on deadline day, but Max Meyer shouldn’t be it. He’s even less likely to end up with Spurs than Isco.
