Luis Garcia double sinks former club

Luis Garcia returned to haunt his former club after netting twice, including a winner deep into stoppage-time, to give new side Real Zaragoza a 2-1 victory over 10-man Espanyol.

Garcia, who left Espanyol this summer after six years, had opened the scoring with a neat header on the half-hour mark but Espanyol improved greatly after the break and were deservedly level when Javi Lopez's cross evaded everyone on its way into the net 19 minutes from time.

Garcia had appeared to have passed up the opportunity to win the game when his 86th-minute penalty was saved by Cristian Alvarez in an incident that saw Lopez dismissed for Espanyol.

However, in the final minute of injury time, a Pablo Barrera cross fell kindly to Garcia at the back post and he fired high beyond Alvarez from five yards.

Zaragoza had been much criticized for their early-season performances but began brightly with Helder Postiga leading the line well with support from Garcia and Ruben Micael.

Indeed Micael should have put Zaragoza ahead after a fine pass from Postiga put him through on goal but he fired over.

Minutes later, though, the hosts were in front as Garcia got across his man at the near post to flick a header across Alvarez and into the net.

The visitors had lacked an attacking threat in the first half but dominated possession in the second period.

Ruben Baena's shot from the edge of the area was deflected just wide before Sergio Garcia's shot on the turn flew over.

Zaragoza goalkeeper Roberto Gimenez had been the hero last week with a penalty save in the 0-0 draw at Rayo Vallecano and he was single-handedly keeping his side ahead as he saved at Garcia's feet before parrying Lopez's shot from distance.

However, the hosts' resistance was finally broken on 71 minutes when Lopez's cross from the right was missed by both Garcia and Roberto and ended up in the bottom corner.

The home side rallied after the equalizer and were given a penalty when Braulio collided with Lopez just inside the area.

The disappointment at the decision was compounded for Espanyol when Lopez was also given his second yellow card for the foul, but Alvarez then made a fantastic save low to his left to repel Garcia's firmly struck spot-kick.

However, the striker who only left Espanyol three weeks ago had the final say with a calm volleyed finish high past Alvarez with virtually the last kick of the game.
