Hannover inaugurates Robert Enke Street

The city of Hannover has named a street after Robert Enke, the German goalkeeper who stepped in front of a train 14 months ago.

The new Robert-Enke-Strasse is close to the home stadium of Hannover, Enke's club between 2004 and 2009.

Stephan Weil, the northern German city's mayor, said Monday that it was unusual to re-name a street so soon after someone's death. The DAPD news agency reported that Weil said Enke was "an exceptional person who moved us greatly."

Enke, who also played for Benfica and Barcelona and won eight caps for Germany, suffered from depression and died on Nov. 10, 2009. He was 32.
