Gomes returns to Vasco 15 months after stroke
Vasco da Gama says former coach Ricardo Gomes will take over as the team's technical director, 15 months after having a stroke on the sidelines of a Brazilian league match.
The 47-year-old Gomes said Wednesday he is taking the director position because he is not in condition yet to return to the sidelines as coach. He will be in charge of overseeing Vasco's football operations.
Gomes collapsed in the second half of Vasco's match against rival Flamengo in the Brazilian league in August last year. He was rushed to the hospital and needed emergency surgery that same day. He spent nearly a month in the hospital and continues to undergo physical therapy.
The former Brazil defender previously coached Sao Paulo and French clubs Paris Saint-Germain and AC Monaco.
