Eredivisie Roundup, Apr. 18
FC Twente beat Feyenoord 2-0 on Sunday but still needs victory at
NAC Breda in the final round of the Dutch league to clinch the
title.
Blaise Nkufo and Miroslav Stoch scored to give Steve
McClaren's team all three points but Ajax's 4-0 win against
Heracles Almelo forced Twente to suspend its title celebrations.
Twente leads the standings with 83 points, one more than
Ajax. PSV Eindhoven, which is third with 77 points, missed out on a
Champions League berth despite beating FC Groningen 3-1.
PSV, Feyenoord and defending champion AZ Alkmaar will feature
in the Europa League next season.
Siem de Jong and Marko Pantelic scored two goals each for
Ajax, which will travel to NEC Nijmegen in the final round on May
2. Ajax has now scored 102 goals in its 33 league games.
"It's a big relief," said McClaren, who will travel to NAC
without key defender Douglas after the Brazilian received his
seventh booking of the season to earn a suspension. "We are in
control. We just need to focus on finishing the job."
Ajax captain Luis Suarez is hoping Twente drop points at NAC,
which will be playing for a Europa League place.
"We are waiting for a draw," Suarez said. "If they draw or
lose and we win, then we are champions. It's as simple as that."
Also Sunday, VVV Venlo beat NEC Nijmegen 2-0 to secure its
safety but Sparta Rotterdam and Willem II face second-division
sides in a playoff that will determine their Eredivisie futures
following losses to FC Utrecht and AZ respectively.
