Andre Schurrle scored a stunning late goal to salvage a 2-2 draw for German side Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League group F encounter with Real Madrid.
The game got off to a fast start with both teams playing with high intensity. Real Madrid, determined to improve their record of never having won at Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park. And they were ahead on 17 minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring, drilling home after latching onto Gareth Bale’s back-heeled pass. It capped off a lovely move with James Rodriguez, Luka Modric, and Toni Kroos, all involved in the build-up.
Dortmund, determined not to be pushed-over by their stellar opponents, kept piling on the pressure. Two minutes before half-time, they got their reward. Goalkeeper Keylor Navas’ blooper from a free-kick allowed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to score a close-range equaliser. Ronaldo then had the ball in the back of the net in the stoppage time, but was correctly ruled out for offside.
Real Madrid started the second half stronger, creating multiple chances. They were ahead again on 68 minutes, when Rafael Varane got on the end of a superb cross by Cristiano Ronaldo to score his first goal of the season. Dortmund nearly made it 2-2 just moments later.
But Keylor Navas made a fine save to deny Raphael Guerreiro. But he could do nothing about Andre Schurrle’s effort, three minutes from time to deny Real Madrid the three points.
English teams enjoy victories
It was a good day for the English sides, as both Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur secured 1-0 wins in the second round of the group stage fixtures. Islam Slimani scored the only goal, as Leicester City maintained their winning start in the Champions League group stages.
Tottenham Hotspur also won as Heung-min Son continued his fine form to score the winner in the 71st minute. Elsewhere, Juventus thrashed Dynamo Zagreb 4-0, with new signings Gonzalo Higuain, Miralem Pjanic, and Dani Alves, all on the score-sheet.
