Brazilian World Cup referee suspended for mistakes

Referee Carlos Eugenio Simon, who will officiate at next year's World Cup, has been suspended for the rest of the season because of repeated mistakes in the Brazilian league.

The Brazilian football confederation said Monday that Simon will not referee again this year because of a "repetition of mistakes."

His latest blunder came Sunday in Fluminense's 1-0 victory over Palmeiras at Maracana stadium.

Palmeiras striker Obina found the net in the 28th minute, when the match was scoreless, but Simon disallowed the goal due to Obina apparently fouling a defender. Replays appeared to show there was no wrongdoing in the play.

The loss dropped Palmeiras from the lead with four rounds remaining.
