Laszlo Boloni has taken over as the new coach of Lens, replacing Jean-Guy Wallemme at the French club.
Lens president Gervais Martel said Sunday that Wallemme had asked to be relieved of his duties after a 2-2 draw with Bordeaux on Dec. 22. His side has won only three of 18 league games this season and lies second from bottom in the table.
The 57-year-old Boloni won the European Cup as a player with Steaua Bucharest in 1986 and led Sporting to the Portuguese title in 2002. He also won the Belgian title with Standard Liege in 2009 and has previously coached Nancy, Rennes and Monaco.
Boloni becomes the top-flight's second coaching change this season, after last-place Arles replaced Michel Estevan with former Bosnia coach Faruk Hadzibegic in October.
