Berizzo resigns as Estudiantes coach

Eduardo Berizzo has quit as Estudiantes coach following a series of poor results, only four months after being hired.

Berizzo had replaced Alejandro Sabella, who surprised the club by stepping away just weeks after winning the Apertura title. Berizzo announced his resignation Monday in a note to the club's top two officials, Marcelo Malaspina and Eduardo Vera.

Sunday's 2-0 loss to Independiente prompted the resignation. Estudiantes trails leader Velez Sarsfield by 11 points.

Berizzo most recently served as an assistant to Marcelo Bielsa with Chile's national team, which reached the second round of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
