Athletico Madrid agree deal to sign Vietto from Villareal

Published Jul. 7, 2015 4:31 p.m. ET

Luciano Vietto took a step closer to joining Atletico Madrid, after the capital club confirmed a deal has been agreed with Villarreal.

The Argentine has been linked with a move to the Spanish capital throughout the offseason, and the switch to Atleti is expected to be formalized on Wednesday.

Vietto is set to sign a new six-year contract at the Vicente Calderon and will start preseason training with Atleti immediately.

Head coach Diego Simeone has been keen to reinforce his attacking options after Mario Mandzukic was allowed to join Juventus.

Simeone is a familiar face for his compatriot, with the duo having worked together when the former was coach of Racing Club in Argentina.

Vietto left his homeland for La Liga ahead of the 2014-15 season and the 21-year-old enjoyed a fine debut campaign for Villarreal, scoring 20 goals in all competitions.
