American Adu joins Greek club Aris on loan

American forward Freddy Adu is joining Greek club Aris on an 18-month loan from Portuguese team Benfica.
The club announced the deal Wednesday but did not disclose financial details.
Adu will partner with fellow American striker Eddie Johnson, who joined Aris on loan from Fulham over the Christmas holidays after making little impact at the Premier League club.
Both players are vying to be on the United States national team when it heads to its sixth straight World Cup appearance in South Africa.
``A lot of thought and research went into this,'' the Ghana-born Adu said on his Twitter feed.
The 20-year-old Adu was seen as an emerging star as a teenager, becoming the youngest player in Major League Soccer history as a 14-year-old in 2004. Two years later, he became the youngest player to play for the men's national team.
But in Europe, Adu failed to establish himself at Benfica and was loaned in September to the smaller Portuguese club Belenenses.
In an interview with the Greek club's radio station, Adu said he would travel Thursday to the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki where Aris is based.
``I watched last night's game. I really like the way Aris plays, with (Spanish striker) Toni Calvo,'' Adu said. ``We play a similar type of game.''
Aris is currently fourth in the Greek league with 25 points after beating Atromitos 3-0 away Tuesday.
The United States will play England, Slovenia and Algeria in Group C in this year's World Cup in South Africa.
The Americans play Honduras in a Jan. 23 exhibition and the travel to the Netherlands on March 3.
