War of Ireland: Conor McGregor and WWE star Sheamus battle on Twitter

Published Nov. 22, 2014 4:10 p.m. ET

No one can ever accuse UFC bad boy Conor McGregor of backing down from a fight, even if it's against one of his home countrymen, who just happens to be about seven inches taller and over 100 pounds heavier than him.

McGregor appeared on SI Now, where he was asked in a hypothetical situation who would win in a fight between him and WWE superstar Sheamus, who also happens to hail from the same hometown of Dublin, Ireland.

Without batting an eye, McGregor fired back at his red-headed, Irish brethren.

"I would whoop his ass," McGregor said. "It would be no contest."

Well, it didn't take long for the Twitter world to get posed with the same question and it looks like Sheamus, who is on the sidelines in WWE right now after having surgery earlier this week, was paying attention as well.

He responded with his own quick wit.

Of course McGregor, never one to walk away from a challenge, then decided to up the ante by invoking the name of current WWE champion and former UFC champion Brock Lesnar into the conversation.

You can imagine where things went from there.

It seems in the long run, the two Irish athletes made peace and ended with a promised toast at Christmas alongside some fine Irish whiskey between friends.  Careful, Sheamus -- McGregor has a fight three weeks after Christmas and if you get him drunk, then you'll have to answer to Dana White.

Erin go bragh indeed.
