Vikings DB Newman wins NFC Defensive Player of the Week award

Published Nov. 18, 2015 10:40 a.m. ET

For the second time this season the best defensive player in the NFC is a Viking.

Veteran cornerback Terence Newman was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday after snapping up two interceptions and defending five passes in the Vikings' 30-14 win over the Oakland Raiders.

The honor is just the second weekly award of the 37-year-old defender's NFL tenure, despite a lengthy career that spans three teams and 13 seasons.

The Kansas State product currently sits at third on the all-time interceptions list after Newman became the first player aged 37 or older since hall of famer Deion Sanders to register two interceptions in a game.

Newman is the third Viking to pick up a weekly award this season, joining special teamer Marcus Sherels and defensive lineman Linval Joseph.
