Tizway to miss Jockey Club Gold Cup

Tizway will miss the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup on Oct. 1 at Belmont Park because of a fever he developed that caused him to miss a scheduled workout Friday.

Trainer James Bond says Tizway spiked a fever Thursday and was lethargic, and that it wouldn't be fair to the 6-year-old horse to run him in the Gold Cup and then run him in the Breeders' Cup Classic a month later.

Tizway would have been the likely favorite for the Grade 1 Gold Cup.

Bond says Tizway is still on schedule to start in the $5 million BC Classic at Churchill Downs on Nov. 5.

Tizway won the Metropolitan Handicap on May 30 and the Whitney Handicap on Aug. 6, making him a leading contender for Horse of the Year honors.
