Terry Collins writes letter to widow of longtime Mets fan
New York Mets manager Terry Collins obviously has his hands full trying to keep his team in the hunt for the postseason, but that didn’t prevent him from recently taking some time to send a heartfelt letter to the widow of a longtime fan of the team.
Evidence of Collins’ thoughtful gesture surfaced on Wednesday by a user on Reddit, who apparently was posting in response to the passing of Collins' own father, Loren Collins, in February.
“My dad and I watched the Mets together for my whole life,” the user, “animalchief,” wrote. “He died 9 months ago. Somehow, the team found out, and Terry Collins sent this to my mother.”
“Dear Kate,” Collins writes in the letter. “Just got a note about the passing of your husband last fall. Sorry to be so late but mail moves slowly here. I know Pete was a big Mets fan and will be missed. Hopefully this finds you doing well and looking forward. My condolences, and if I can help in any way, let me know.”
Collins joins a long list of superstar athletes and coaches — such as Tiger Woods, Roy Williams, Peyton Manning and Chuck Pagano, among others — who have used the power of the written word to lift the spirits of fans going through some kind of crisis. But the stories never get old.
Collins and the Mets sit at 52-49, two-and-a-half games back of the Washington Nationals in the National League East and four games back in the Wild Card race. Maybe the skipper’s act of kindness will deliver some positive mojo for the Mets down the stretch.
